1 Chronicles 23

Solomon Reigns

1 Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

2 And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites.

Offices of the Levites

3 The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, and their number by census of men was 38,000.

4 Of these, 24,000 were to oversee the work of the house of the Lord; and 6,000wereofficers and judges,

5 and 4,000weregatekeepers, and 4,000werepraising the Lordwith the instruments which David made for giving praise.

6 David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Gershonites

7 Of the GershoniteswereLadan and Shimei.

8 The sons of LadanwereJehiel the first and Zetham and Joel, three.

9 The sons of ShimeiwereShelomoth and Haziel and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’householdsof Ladan.

10 The sons of ShimeiwereJahath, Zina, Jeush and Beriah. These fourwerethe sons of Shimei.

11 Jahath was the first and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a father’s household, one class.

Kohathites

12 The sons of Kohath were four: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.

13 The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the Lord, to minister to Him and to bless in His name forever.

14 Butas forMoses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

15 The sons of MoseswereGershom and Eliezer.

16 The son of GershomwasShebuel the chief.

17 The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

18 The son of Izhar was Shelomith the chief.

19 The sons of HebronwereJeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.

20 The sons of UzzielwereMicah the first and Isshiah the second.

Merarites

21 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of MahliwereEleazar and Kish.

22 Eleazar died and had no sons, but daughters only, so their brothers, the sons of Kish, took themas wives.

23 The sons of Mushiwerethree: Mahli, Eder and Jeremoth.

Duties Revised

24 These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households,eventhe heads of the fathers’householdsof those of them who were counted, in the number of names by their census, doing the work for the service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.

25 For David said, “The LordGod of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever.

26 Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service.”

27 For by the last words of David the sons of Leviwerenumbered from twenty years old and upward.

28 For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the Lord, in the courts and in the chambers and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God,

29 and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, orwhat is baked inthe pan or what is well-mixed, and all measures of volume and size.

30 They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the Lord, and likewise at evening,

31 and to offer all burnt offerings to the Lord, on the sabbaths, the new moons and the fixed festivals in the numbersetby the ordinance concerning them, continually before the Lord.

32 Thus they are to keep charge of the tent of meeting, and charge of the holy place, and charge of the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the Lord.

5 Thus they were divided by lot, the one as the other; for they were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God, both from the descendants of Eleazar and the descendants of Ithamar.

6 Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel the scribe, from the Levites, recorded them in the presence of the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers’householdsof the priests and of the Levites; one father’s household taken for Eleazar and one taken for Ithamar.

7 Now the first lot came out for Jehoiarib, the second for Jedaiah,

17 the twenty-first for Jachin, the twenty-second for Gamul,

19 These were their offices for their ministry whentheycame in to the house of the Lordaccording to the ordinancegivento them through Aaron their father, just as the LordGod of Israel had commanded him.

20 Now for the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah.

21 Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the first.

22 Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath.

23 The sonsof Hebron:Jeriahthe first,Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.

24 Ofthe sons of Uzziel, Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir.

25 The brother of Micah, Isshiah; of the sons of Isshiah, Zechariah.

26 The sons of Merari, Mahli and Mushi; the sons of Jaaziah, Beno.

27 The sons of Merari: by JaaziahwereBeno, Shoham, Zaccur and Ibri.

28 By Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.

29 By Kish: the sons of Kish, Jerahmeel.

30 The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth. Thesewerethe sons of the Levites according to their fathers’ households.

31 These also cast lots just as their relatives the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers’householdsof the priests and of the Levites—the head of fathers’householdsas well as those of his younger brother.

David’s Address about the Temple

1 Now David assembled at Jerusalem all the officials of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the commanders of the divisions that served the king, and the commanders of thousands, and the commanders of hundreds, and the overseers of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, with the officials and the mighty men, even all the valiant men.

2 Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Listen to me, my brethren and my people; Ihadintended to build apermanent home for the ark of the covenant of the Lordand for the footstool of our God. So I had made preparations to buildit.

3 But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for My name because you are a man of war and have shed blood.’

4 Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For He has chosen Judah to be a leader; and in the house of Judah, my father’s house, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to makemeking over all Israel.

5 Of all my sons (for the Lordhas given me many sons), He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lordover Israel.

6 He said to me, ‘Your son Solomon is the one who shall build My house and My courts; for I have chosen him to be a son to Me, and I will be a father to him.

7 I will establish his kingdom forever if he resolutely performs My commandments and My ordinances, as is done now.’

8 So now, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God, observe and seek after all the commandments of the Lordyour God so that you may possess the good land and bequeathitto your sons after you forever.

9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lordsearches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.

10 Consider now, for the Lordhas chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be courageous and act.”

11 Then David gave to his son Solomon the plan of the porchof the temple,its buildings, its storehouses, its upper rooms, its inner rooms and the room for the mercy seat;

12 and the plan of all that he had in mind, for the courts of the house of the Lord, and for all the surrounding rooms, for the storehouses of the house of God and for the storehouses of the dedicated things;

13 also for the divisions of the priests and the Levites and for all the work of the service of the house of the Lordand for all the utensils of service in the house of the Lord;

14 for the goldenutensils,the weight of gold for all utensils for every kind of service; for the silver utensils, the weightof silverfor all utensils for every kind of service;

15 and the weightof goldfor the golden lampstands and their golden lamps, with the weight of each lampstand and its lamps; andthe weight of silverfor the silver lampstands, with the weight of each lampstand and its lamps according to the use of each lampstand;

16 and the gold by weight for the tables of showbread, for each table; and silver for the silver tables;

17 and the forks, the basins, and the pitchers of pure gold; and for the golden bowls with the weight for each bowl; and for the silver bowls with the weight for each bowl;

18 and for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the model of the chariot,eventhe cherubim that spread outtheir wingsand covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

19 “Allthis,”said David,“the Lordmade me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern.”

20 Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LordGod, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lordis finished.

21 Now behold,there arethe divisions of the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God, and every willing man of any skill will be with you in all the work for all kinds of service. The officials also and all the people will be entirely at your command.”

1 Chronicles 29

Offerings for the Temple

1 Then King David said to the entire assembly, “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is still young and inexperienced and the work is great; for the temple is not for man, but for the LordGod.

2 Now with all my ability I have provided for the house of my God the gold for thethings ofgold, and the silver for thethings ofsilver, and the bronze for thethings ofbronze, the iron for thethings ofiron, and wood for thethings ofwood, onyx stones and inlaidstones,stones of antimony and stones of various colors, and all kinds of precious stones and alabaster in abundance.

3 Moreover, in my delight in the house of my God, the treasure I have of gold and silver, I give to the house of my God, over and above all that I have already provided for the holytemple,

4 namely,3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the buildings;

5 of gold for thethings ofgold and of silver for thethings ofsilver, that is, for all the work done by the craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord?”

6 Then the rulers of the fathers’households,and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with the overseers over the king’s work, offered willingly;

7 and for the service for the house of God they gave 5,000 talents and 10,000 darics of gold, and 10,000 talents of silver, and 18,000 talents of brass, and 100,000 talents of iron.

8 Whoever possessedpreciousstones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in care of Jehiel the Gershonite.

9 Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lordwith a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 So David blessed the Lordin the sight of all the assembly; and David said, “Blessed are You, O LordGod of Israel our father, forever and ever.

11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.

12 Both riches and honorcomefrom You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone.

13 Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name.

14 “But who am I and who are my people that we should be able to offer as generously as this? For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given You.

15 For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.

16 O Lordour God, all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy name, it is from Your hand, and all is Yours.

17 Since I know, O my God, that You try the heart and delight in uprightness, I, in the integrity of my heart, have willingly offered all thesethings;so now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here, maketheirofferings willingly to You.

18 O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, our fathers, preserve this forever in the intentions of the heart of Your people, and direct their heart to You;

19 and give to my son Solomon a perfect heart to keep Your commandments, Your testimonies and Your statutes, and to dothemall, and to build the temple, for which I have made provision.”

20 Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless the Lordyour God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and bowed low and did homage to the Lordand to the king.

Sacrifices

21 On the next day they made sacrifices to the Lordand offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 ramsand1,000 lambs, with their drink offerings and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.

22 So they ate and drank that day before the Lordwith great gladness.

Solomon Again Made King

And they made Solomon the son of David king a second time, and they anointedhimas ruler for the Lordand Zadok as priest.

23 Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lordas king instead of David his father; and he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.

24 All the officials, the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David pledged allegiance to King Solomon.

25 The Lordhighly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed on him royal majesty which had not been on any king before him in Israel.

26 Now David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

27 The period which he reigned over Israelwasforty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years and in Jerusalem thirty-threeyears.

Death of David

28 Then he died in a ripe old age, full of days, riches and honor; and his son Solomon reigned in his place.

29 Now the acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the chronicles of Samuel the seer, in the chronicles of Nathan the prophet and in the chronicles of Gad the seer,

30 with all his reign, his power, and the circumstances which came on him, on Israel, and on all the kingdoms of the lands.

2 Chronicles 1

Solomon Worships at Gibeon

1 Now Solomon the son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the Lordhis Godwaswith him and exalted him greatly.

2 Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’households.

3 Then Solomon and all the assembly with him went to the high place which was at Gibeon, for God’s tent of meeting was there, which Moses the servant of the Lordhad made in the wilderness.

4 However, David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.

5 Now the bronze altar, which Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the Lord, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out.

6 Solomon went up there before the Lordto the bronze altar whichwasat the tent of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

7 In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.”

Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom

8 Solomon said to God, “You have dealt with my father David with great lovingkindness, and have made me king in his place.

9 Now, O LordGod, Your promise to my father David is fulfilled, for You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of Yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king,

12 wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you.”

13 So Solomon went from the high place which was at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem, and he reigned over Israel.

Solomon’s Wealth

14 Solomon amassed chariots and horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem.

15 The king made silver and gold as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamores in the lowland.

16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue; the king’s traders procured them from Kue for a price.

17 They imported chariots from Egypt for 600shekelsof silver apiece and horses for 150 apiece, and by the same means they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.

2 Chronicles 2

Solomon Will Build a Temple and Palace

1 Now Solomon decided to build a house for the name of the Lordand a royal palace for himself.

2 So Solomon assigned 70,000 men to carry loads and 80,000 men to quarrystonein the mountains and 3,600 to supervise them.

3 Then Solomon sentwordto Huram the king of Tyre, saying, “As you dealt with David my father and sent him cedars to build him a house to dwell in, so do for me.

4 Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of the Lordmy God, dedicating it to Him, to burn fragrant incense before Him andto set outthe showbread continually, and to offer burnt offerings morning and evening, on sabbaths and on new moons and on the appointed feasts of the Lordour God, thisbeing requiredforever in Israel.

5 The house which I am about to buildwill begreat, for greater is our God than all the gods.

6 But who is able to build a house for Him, for the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain Him? So who am I, that I should build a house for Him, except toburnincensebefore Him?

7 Now send me a skilled man to work in gold, silver, brass and iron, and in purple, crimson and violetfabrics,and who knows how to make engravings, toworkwith the skilled men whom I have in Judah and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided.

8 Send me also cedar, cypress and algum timber from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut timber of Lebanon; and indeed my servantswill workwith your servants,

9 to prepare timber in abundance for me, for the house which I am about to buildwill begreat and wonderful.

10 Now behold, I will give to your servants, the woodsmen who cut the timber, 20,000kors of crushed wheat and 20,000 kors of barley, and 20,000 baths of wine and 20,000 baths of oil.”

Huram to Assist

11 Then Huram, king of Tyre, answered in a letter sent to Solomon: “Because the Lordloves His people, He has made you king over them.”

12 Then Huram continued, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, endowed with discretion and understanding, who will build a house for the Lordand a royal palace for himself.

13 “Now I am sending Huram-abi, a skilled man, endowed with understanding,

14 the son of a Danite woman and a Tyrian father, who knows how to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone and wood,andin purple, violet, linen and crimson fabrics, andwho knows howto make all kinds of engravings and to execute any design which may be assigned to him,to workwith your skilled men and with those of my lord David your father.

15 Now then, let my lord send to his servants wheat and barley, oil and wine, of which he has spoken.

16 We will cut whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you on rafts by sea to Joppa, so that you may carry it up to Jerusalem.”

17 Solomon numbered all the aliens whowerein the land of Israel, following the census which his father David had taken; and 153,600 were found.

18 He appointed 70,000 of them to carry loads and 80,000 to quarrystonesin the mountains and 3,600 supervisors to make the people work.

The Temple Construction in Jerusalem

1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lordin Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, wherethe Lordhad appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

2 He began to build on the seconddayin the second month of the fourth year of his reign.

Dimensions and Materials of the Temple

3 Now these are the foundations which Solomon laid for building the house of God. The length incubits, according to the old standardwassixty cubits, and the width twenty cubits.

4 The porch which was in front of the house was as long as the width of the house, twenty cubits, and the height 120; and inside he overlaid it with pure gold.

5 He overlaid the main room with cypress wood and overlaid it with fine gold, and ornamented it with palm trees and chains.

6 Further, he adorned the house with precious stones; and the gold was gold from Parvaim.

7 He also overlaid the house with gold—the beams, the thresholds and its walls and its doors; and he carved cherubim on the walls.

8 Now he made the room of the holy of holies: its length across the width of the housewastwenty cubits, and its widthwastwenty cubits; and he overlaid it with fine gold,amountingto 600 talents.

9 The weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold. He also overlaid the upper rooms with gold.

10 Then he made two sculptured cherubim in the room of the holy of holies and overlaid them with gold.

11 The wingspan of the cherubimwastwenty cubits; the wing of one, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house, anditsother wing, of five cubits, touched the wing of the other cherub.

12 The wing of the other cherub, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house; anditsother wing of five cubits was attached to the wing of the first cherub.

13 The wings of these cherubim extended twenty cubits, and they stood on their feet facing themainroom.

14 He made the veil of violet, purple, crimson and fine linen, and he worked cherubim on it.

15 He also made two pillars for the front of the house, thirty-five cubits high, and the capital on the top of eachwasfive cubits.

16 He made chains in the inner sanctuary and placedthemon the tops of the pillars; and he made one hundred pomegranates and placedthemon the chains.

17 He erected the pillars in front of the temple, one on the right and the other on the left, and named the one on the right Jachin and the one on the left Boaz.
